More than 150 new Tennessee laws have taken effect as of July 1st. 

Here are a few of the most notable:


  • The state's sales tax on groceries has been reduced from 5.5% to 5.25%. This effectively means you save five cents on every $10 worth of groceries...or about $40 per year, per family.  
  • DUI penalty increased if child under 18 is in car.
  • Embryo Assault: includes embryo as victim in assaults on pregnant women.
  • Bath Salts: it is now a felony to sell synthetic drugs known as bath salts.
  • Domestic Abuse: requires mandatory jail time for repeat domestic abuse convictions.
  • Pimp law: requires those convicted of promoting prostitution to register as a sex offender.
  • Gun law: those who have multiple felony gun conviction must serve 100% of sentence.
  • Gateway sexual activity:  prohibits teachers from promoting or condoning 'gateway sexual activity'. 
  • Saggy Pants: prohibits students from wearing saggy pants or other indecent clothing on school grounds.
  • School bus behavior: regulates student conduct on school buses; permits school personnel, including bus drivers, to use reasonable force; subject to certain restrictions; in maintaining discipline.
  • Motorcycle passengers: must have their feet on footpegs.
  • Tattoo legislation: increases penalty for tattooing a minor.
  • New welfare legislation requires new applicants to undergo a special screening process. If suspicion is rained after the screening, then the applicant may be drug tested.
