Around 150 members of the National Guard's 212th Engineer Company based in Camden & Paris left early this morning for a one year deployment to Kuwait. There was a deployment ceremony including family and friends at the National Guard Armory in Paris this morning at 3:30 before they left at 4:30 on the way to Fort Bliss in Texas. They flew out of McKellar Sipes Airport in Jackson around 7:30. They will be involved in a month of training there before leaving for Kuwait. The deployment is in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and the unit (which consists of a great number of electricians, plumbers & carpenters) will be involved in construction projects there. This isn't the first time for some members of the company, who have already been deployed two or three times before. In fact the Paris unit was deployed to Iraq and Kuwait in 2002 & 2003 and assisted in the building of fuel pipelines and missile sites as well as detainee holding facilities. The company even received an award, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, for its service in that campaign. Our thoughts and prayers will be with these brave men and women during their service and for their safe return.
