After 100,000 deaths, DEA cracks down on hydrocodone.

October 6, 2014

Effective today (10/6/14) the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency has enacted new rules for the distribution of hydrocodone-based painkillers. The new rules bump the drug up to the Schedule II category, joining cocaine, meth, oxycodone and others.

Under the new rules, doctors will be the only medical personnel allowed to sign prescription forms. Previously some prescriptions may have been issued by nurse practitioners, physician assistants or other midlevel providers. Additionally, the prescripiton must be handwritten. Faxed or phoned-in prescriptions are no longer allowed. The prescription itself must be limited to 30 days or less and the initial drug issuance per patient is limited to no longer than 90 days total. Further prescriptions will require another doctor visit.

Last  year over 120 million prescriptions for hydrocodone-based drugs were written by health care providers. The drug, however, has created an ever growing population of dependent users who often resort to illegal methods to obtain their fix. Over the past 10 years, over 100,000 people have died from hydrocodone overdoses with a statistical spike in the last 3 years.

The new category placement can also result in stiffer penalties for those who are caught illegally distributing, transporting, or using hydrocodone-based products.
