New information suggests GM's top officials knew about defective ignition switch before recall, counter to their congressional testimony.

November 10, 2014

CNN says an attorney has found emails indicating knowledge of the ignition switch problem at the top levels of GM months before they admitted in congressional testimony. The emails also suggest they knew before an outside investigation conducted by the company. This new information shows that GM ordered 500,000 replacement ignition switches almost two months before announcing there was a problem.

The attorney, Robert Hilliard, said "This is simply mind-blowing in its raw evilness" and "requires a reexamination of the truth of (GM CEO Mary) Barra's involvement."

Barra had previously said she first learned of the problem in late January and that she and other GM top executives acted "without hesitation".  GM publicly announced the recall plans in mid February.

The ignition switch problem could cause vehicles to shut off while being driven, disabling many safety features including power steering, brake features, and air bags. Lawsuits have claimed over 100 injuries and as many as 30 deaths due to switch failures. Read more about the new information here.
