Poison Control Centers: 1 child per hour injured due to laundry pods

November 12, 2014

A new report says over 17,000 children under age 6 have swallowed, inhaled, or been exposed to laundry pod components in 2012 and 2013...a shocking average of 1 per hour! Of those, over 800 required hospitalization, about 100 of them requiring tracheal intubation, and 1 died.

Approximately two thirds of those affected were 1 to 2 years of age. After they were exposed to the pods, 48% became ill, ranging from vomiting to coughing, choking, eye irritation, and/or drowsiness. The full report can be seen here.

Recommendations:

  • Use traditional laundry detergent, which is typically less toxic.

  • Keep the laundry pods high and out of sight. A locked cabinet is best.

  • Close laundry pod packages or containers and put them away after use.

  • Add the national poison hotline number, (800) 222-1222, to your cell phone contacts, and keep it written near home phones.
