4 more GM ignition switch deaths and claim deadline extended to 1/31/15

January 11, 2015

Four more deaths, as of December 15, 2014, had been linked to GM's ignition defect. That raises the total to 42 fatalities that General Motors now admits to. This new information was released in a report from those organizing the compensation fund for victims of crashes that were caused by the faulty ignition switch. GM has now received over 2,300 claims (over 250 for death, more than 150 for injuries, and almost 2,000 for hospitalization required less serious injuries).  So far the fund organizers have found seven claims for serious injuries to be eligible, and approved over 50 lesser injury claims.

This latest report shows 42 death claims, up from the previous 38.  Payment for death claims deemed eligible is at least $1 million, according to the protocol of the fund. Payouts for severe injuries are calculated on a case by case basis and consider whether or not long-term care is required. Claims were accepted beginning in August, but General Motors said (in November 2014) that the deadline has been extended for applications to its ignition switch compensation fund to January 31, 2015.

GM reportedly sent notices to over 4 million current/previous owners of eligible GM cars and says that extending the deadline is “out of an abundance of caution.” Based upon law firm's handling of claims, attorneys believe GM knew of the serious safety defect and staged a massive cover-up for over a decade. As a result, law firms feel hundreds of innocent people were killed and hundreds more injured due to the defective ignition switch and the subsequent cover-up.
