5 of Tennessee's 10 highest unemployment counties are in West Tennessee

September 10, 2015

According to the latest available figures*, 5 of the top 10 highest unemployment counties in the state are in West Tennessee.

While Hancock County leads the state with a 12.9% unemployment rate, the West Tennessee counties of Obion, Lauderdale, Haywood, McNairy, and Carroll have a higher rate than 86 other counties in the state. Obion has the fourth highest unemployment rate at 9.6%, while Lauderdale (9.5%), Haywood (9.4%), McNairy (9.2%), and Carroll (9.1%) snagged positions 6 through 9.

As the state claims a 5.7% unemployment rate, it is obvious that several counties in West Tennessee are struggling with a much slower economic recovery...if it can be called a recovery at all. It should also be noted that the unemployment figures do not include those who either are no longer qualified for unemployment, have opted to take a part time or lower wage paying job, or have flatly given up on trying to find work. When considering those factors, the outlook is rather bleak.
