July 1, 2017, a new law goes into effect in Tennessee, expanding the current traffic law that requires all drivers to 'move over' when flashing light emergency vehicles (or TDOT workers) are on the side of the highway to now include passenger vehicles as well.
Any time drivers in Tennessee approach a vehicle on either the side of the road or on the shoulder with their emergency/hazard flashers on, they are required to move into the next legal lane. The purpose of this new law is to help prevent traffic back-ups and keep drivers with disabled vehicles safer.
Fines for not adhering to this new law are up to $500, or 30 days in jail.
