Are we celebrating COVID victory too soon?  Yes, maybe we are.

Headlines locally have been celebrating a reduction in hospitalizations due to coronavirus.

Yes, that's good news.

But are we celebrating too early?

Despite new hospitalizations being down, the death rate in Tennessee is back to averaging more than 100 per day.

The trend this week isn't exactly encouraging:
  • +76 deaths on Sunday
  • +103 on Monday
  • +147 on Tuesday
  • +133 on Wednesday
  • +169 on Thursday
  • +203 on Friday

Additionally, while we can also celebrate vaccinations being underway...here are the facts:
  • Phase 2, for age 70+ went into effect in most Tennessee counties this week. There are an estimated 300,000 in the 70 to 74 age group.  At this rate, it will take many more months before enough Tennessee residents are vaccinated to have an effective impact.
  • While officials are touting the 'number of vaccines' administered - what they aren't telling you is that they're lumping together '1st dose only' with 'both dose' totals.  In truth, the vaccine is only effective after receiving both doses. So less than half of those 'vaccinated' so far - are 'completely vaccinated.'
    See the numbers here.
  • A new study has also found that 1 in 4 people have no intention of taking the vaccine at all.
  • And new information out of South Africa and England, where variants of the coronavirus first emerged, are proving the vaccine is much less effective against the variant. That same variant of COVID has now been found in 80 countries, including over 500 cases already in the U.S.  According to reports, the variants (a) spread twice as easily (b) are deadlier and (c) drops the vaccine efficiency rate under 50% (compared to almost 90% vs COVID19)   Sources here and here.

The bottom line is, we may be winning some battles, but this war is far from over.

Smart families are planning their next steps, including debt resolution or bankruptcy choices.
